Ruling MDP boycotts Peace talk with the opposition

The Ruling MDP has today boycotted peace talk between the opposition and the government. The peace talks were mediated by the UN resident co-ordinator in Maldives. The political landscape of Maldives escalated after the government decided to lease Male’ International Airport.
The ruling MDP did not inform the reasons behind the boycott.

DRP and MDP West Minister Agreement key points June/July 2006
The points of agreement as seen from the media were-
* Both sides agreed that the aim of the talks and that of the reform process of the government should be to create lasting structures and institutions of democracy in the country.
* The Constitutional reforms will be completed by November 7, 2007 and national elections will be held thereafter.
* The MDP on its side agreed to “tone down” its activities to ensure that no law and order problem is created.
* The Government would release all political prisoners including “high profile” ones. ( This would mean besides Jennifer Latheef, Mohamed Nasheed – Anni will also be released.)
* The Government agreed to amend the decree of freedom of assembly in line with the international standards. The MDP assured that once the amendment is made, the party would abide by the regulations.
* The Government agreed to overhaul the police force. A Police Integrity Commission will be established to make the Police a “community based civilian force.”
* The Government also agreed to adopt the new criminal Procedures as suggested in the judicial reforms package of the Attorney General.
* Both sides have agreed to cooperate to speed up the process of constitutional reforms .
* Both sides agreed that talks will have to show results quickly. A period of three months has been set for the implementation of the first phase.
