Why did the cabinet members resigned today?
Today all the members of Maldives cabinet ministers resigned. They resigned saying that they don’t get support from parliament.
The resignations came in a time when the only international airport in the country was leased to a foreign company in a controversial deal. The parliament passed a amendment to the public finance act which prohibits selling, leasing etc government assets without prior approval from the parliament. Also a cabinet ministers motion of no confidence was tabled for tomorrows peoples Majlis…more news coming.
The cabinet resignation was a cover to arrest MPs. Because under the Parliamentary Rules an MP cannot be arrested while a no-confidence motion against an MP is tabled before the Parliament. The opposition, supported by one of President Nasheed’s governing Party the Adaalath Party has tabled a no-confidence motion against the education Minister Mr. Mustafa Luthufee. Vote against Mustafa is scheduled for tomorrow and is expected to pass comfortably. The Opposition has also said that they will take no-confidence motion against the finance minister for allowing lease of the Male’ International Airport to an Indian Company.
